Before establishing a formal business relationship, wise IT project managers protect their business interests with appropriate legal contracts.

During the initial stages of project development, IT professionals often rely on informal records based on e-mails sent back and forth with the client. While e-mail does provide a record of communication between you and your customer, legally, it can’t stand in for a signed project agreement that clearly outlines the scope and expectations of a project.

As part of a good project risk management strategy, it’s especially important to have a consulting contract or project agreement in place before any money changes hands.

A Project Agreement Is the Foundation of Project Risk Management

Having a signed IT project management agreement before you begin an engagement can reduce or eliminate complications that could spring up during your project.

Solid project agreements or contracts are a critical first step in project management, as well as a vital part of your project risk management plan to protect your business. Defining all project elements early and in writing may help prevent legal trouble down the line, saving you thousands of dollars in legal costs and countless hours in a courtroom.

A sound project contract also helps to ensure that you receive the compensation that you and your client have agreed upon. Too often, a project is well under way when a client suddenly decides not to pay, tries to lower the price of the job, or changes project terms. If any of these things happen and your interactions with your client are not governed by a contract, you could lose a lot of time and money, and your good relationship with your client could quickly go south.

Consulting Contracts for IT Project Managers

In general, consulting contracts spell out each party’s responsibilities, as well as:

• Compensation

• Expenses

• Terms

• Confidentiality

• Project reporting

• Termination rules

For tech project managers, a consulting services agreement typically spells out the work you are to do and defines the terms of your working arrangement with the client. It lays out the limits of your responsibilities to the client, as well as the terms for your pricing and payment.

A consulting agreement also protects your intellectual property rights and establishes confidentiality standards that protect both you and your client. It limits any losses for the work you perform and prevents your client from hiring away your key employees. This type of project agreement also limits your liabilities should your client suffer any losses as a result of errors or omissions on your part.

In addition to the main consulting agreement, depending on the job, project managers may need other, additional contracts. These agreements might include employment, network installation and maintenance, staffing and placement, or subcontractor and independent contractor agreements.

Subcontractor or independent contractor agreements are particularly important because they govern the relationship between you and any subcontractors you may hire to work on a project. Such contracts clearly outline who owns licenses and intellectual property, and prohibit your subcontractor from stealing your client’s business or from being hired away from you by the client.

Contract Project Manager

In these times of crisis, we are reminded how unsecure our jobs can be. In such a market would you consider contracting?

If the answer is yes, then you probably believe that you will not be able to get a role as a contractor, so let me dispel a few of the common myths surrounding this:

“I have to be very experienced before I become a contractor”

No you don’t – think of contractors as mercenaries or extras in a film, or even temps. Businesses need personnel to fill resource gaps at all levels – junior, senior etc…

“When times are hard and permanent staff are getting laid off – the contract market suffers”

Actually this is not true. The reason contractors are so attractive to companies is they can be hired and released at short notice; even though contractors are more expensive they do not come under headcount costs.

“Contracting will ruin my CV”

If you make the decision to become a contractor 3 month roles and gaps in between roles will not affect your chances of getting a role, if you explain them properly in your CV as well as in interview.

“If I am a Contractor I won’t be able to get back into a permanent role”

This is not necessarily true, in this modern age employers are becoming wiser to different employment practices. Many people now realise that breaks for travelling, sabbaticals, postgraduate study breaks, or contracting for a number of years in between permanent roles are an acceptable part of people’s careers.

“I have to have Industry Sector Experience to get a role in that Sector”

This is not necessarily true; however the market is set up so that those who are a lower risk and better fit the brief will get the job. This means if you have any experience in the sector you are trying join you are more likely to be considered for a role than someone with none.

“If Demand shifts I will not be able to get a contract – no-body will want me!”

If demand changes for your specialism, you can “drop” to related areas. For example if Investment banking fails, then I can try for retail banking or the financial sector in general.

If this changes your mind, you will need to market yourself with an up to date CV and register with the various job sites. The contractor market and contract Project Manager jobs are advertised on numerous job sites.

Below are my tips on the most efficient process in applying for roles:

Send CV in response to job advert

Take a note of:

When you sent CV

Recruiters contact name

Recruiters contact details

Name of agency

Where you saw the advert

Call recruiter to confirm they received your CV

Get recruiter to check CV suitability for role

Make a note of whether you were suitable

Get recruiter feedback

Make a note of recruiter feedback

Chase recruiter daily until – shortlisted or rejected

Phoenix-based Mesa Airlines cuts 250 jobs EmploymentCrossing.com Regional airline Mesa Air is cutting 250 jobs, about 6% of its work force, as it struggles with declining air traffic and a contract loss, according to the AP. Mesa executive vice president Brian Gillman says about 100 management and administrative positions were eliminated last week. About 150 pilots will also be let go. Pilots union official Brian Richardson said that about 15 pilots have been furloughed so far and Mesa is offering a voluntary leave plan. Phoenix-based Mesa operates some Mesa Airlines flights and the Go! inter-island airline in Hawaii. But the company’s main business is operating regional commuter flights for US Airways, United Airlines and Delta. US Airways has trimmed flights and one of Mesa’s Delta contracts was recently canceled. Mesa’s safety record was noted as having the fewest incidents of domestic regional airlines in the Journal of Air Transportation For more information on jobs in your area, click here.
Help answer the question about contract management jobs
My love is leaving for a year's work contract in Afghanistan. What can I do?
Ok here is the deal.

I went out with my girlfriend for 3 years, then we split up for various reasons…in July last year.

we got back in contact around October and started to become friends..but the chemistry and love was still very much there, and we started to date again in January of this year.

We also planned a tripped to Vietnam together.

I wanted to show her I had changed, as one of my mistakes in our r.ship was that I did not plan enough with her as a couple…mainly because I was not out. She always wanted to travel widely with me. So we planned this trip, booked the flights, booked accomodation etc. I negotiated annual leave too at work.

Now she works for an International Developement organisation in the field of emergency logistics.

2 days before we fly out, she tells me her boss has asked her to go to the Solomon islands to fill in as they have had floods there..and she needs to help out with admin and budgets for 3 weeks and she needs to leave in few days time. Her boss also said it was a great opportunity for her to get field experience, which she needs to get to progress in her role. She tried telling me one minute on the phone she had to go and it's the nature of her work, then she said that her boss says it's a great opportunity. I couldn;t quite tell if it was actually crucial she had to go..

her boss knew she had a commitment elsewhere and had leave booked and her friend had flights confirmed etc. And she would be letting me down. Anyway, she was very apologetic even though I was sad and paid my cancellation fees and took me to a hotel for valentine's day before she left. I tried to be supportive.

She got back, and I picked her up from airport..we spent time together again and things were still lovey dovey and steamy. She showed real love for me again and kept saying it, and wanted to still go away with me and we started researching trips.

On saturday night, she tells me she has been offered a job contract for 1 year in Afghanistan. It;s a management field work job, pays well and free accomodation. Afghanistan?? and one year??

she said she was leaning towards it and had to let them know by Monday. She said it all happened so fast..

but what upset me is, that she did a phone interview for it while she was in the solomon islands! and didn't think to let me know. She says she apparently didn't think it meant anything yet…and didn;t want to alarm me in case it meant nothing.

But then they offered her the job and she was not expecting it. But she had her hesitations- Us. But said she really needs this field experience so she can progress and said she needs to get it out of the way so then she can just have an office based job in Europe after (where I want to be end of year).

She said she knows this decision looks like i am not important to her and she is just leaving…but she thinks she is doing it for us in the long term. We would still go away in June…meet up..she could pay for my flight…then when I go to Europe in december, she would meet me there for another holiday …and then few months more go by, and she would move to where I am there.

She said she would commit to this long distance because it would mean we would be better..and together again quicker than I think.

I am torn. Not to mention I am not sure I trust her now she has shown a bit of unreliability! any thoughts?

If you are interested in applying for construction management jobs, there are many different online degrees that can help you achieve your goals and fast track your career. The best part is that you can earn these degrees from the comfort of your own home and create a schedule that works for you and your current work and time commitments.

The best candidates for most construction management jobs have experience on the job and also some sort of formal construction project management training. To do this most effectively, one way that is recommended is to earn an online construction management degree or an online construction engineering degree, in addition to gaining hands-on experience through an apprenticeship or on-site training. Regardless of the degree you select, it is very important to make sure the online university you choose is accredited. This is the only way to ensure your degree will be recognized by future employers and other higher learning institutions, which is important if you ever need to transfer your credits.

The construction management courses that you will be required to take while achieving your degree will give you all of the necessary skills that job site experience cannot provide on its own. Plus, many degrees required for construction management jobs allow you to select different areas of focus you can specialize in. The different types of course work you can focus on include business and financial management, contract administration, cost estimating, building codes and standards, information technology, inspection procedures, site planning, engineering and architectural sciences, construction project management training. Another key focus of your degree can be technical training on how to use the most advanced industry software in the construction management field.

Once you graduate from your online degree program, you can decide which types of construction management jobs are right for you and the skill-set you have worked hard to build. Some construction management jobs will require you to be involved in each project from its inception until construction is finished. This means that you would oversee not only the workforce, but also all of the construction materials, tools, equipment and safety measures that are required for each phase of the project. Other construction management jobs may allow you to focus on the degree specializations you have chosen. For example, if you have completed course work and apprenticeships related to architecture and engineering, you should consider looking for construction management jobs where you would manage or directly interface with the architects and engineers on the project.

There were over 380,000 construction management jobs in the United States in 2002 and the number of construction management jobs is expected to remain on par with the number of individuals entering the field for at least the next five years. So, now is a great time to earn your online degree and get the experience you need to start your dream job in construction management.

I was a tag along at that point with her. I had management jobs in retail and even became a Licensed Financial Advisor. The problem is, the terms of her contract were short lived in certain places, so this shows on my resume as such. How do I get the opportunity to explain this to perspective employers?
